May 24th

Will: We wrapped up our time in Ndola by revisiting Mapalo. Our next destination would be a night in Lusaka as we made our way to Livingstone.

Brittany: We had the opportunity to visit some of the community schools today, and we met some of the teachers with whom David has spent much of his time in Zambia. Many children attend public schools in Zambia, but most of the orphaned and vulnerable children cannot afford the fees. Community schools started by neighborhood churches serve these children.  Some of the challenges facing these schools are adequate space, not enough teachers for the number of students, and lack of materials.

Zambia: A Day at the Market

Will: Aside from that fact that he is almost 8,000 miles away, the best advantage of visiting David while he is making his home in Ndola is that he has become somewhat savvy in the local ways. With that boon (with assistance every now and then from David Temfwe), we made the rounds in some areas your average foreigner would not be going. This probably includes Masala market. Masala is a cultural equivalent to our supercenter, the one stop shop that has everything you need (or don’t need). Masala had an array of new (mainly cheap China manufactured commodities) and second-hand items (with the shops arranged accordingly). Anything from monkey wrenches to bogus EPL tops. You can also do your ration shopping at Masala (nothing like huge, stinky piles of kapenta).

Brittany: Visiting the market in Masala (another compound outside of Ndola) makes my top ten list of “moments where I’ve felt most out of place.”  I had many of these moments in Africa.  David loves a good haggle, so we decided to do some shopping.  This market contained booths with everything: clothing, tools, furniture, and food.  Will and I purchased a couple of patterned chitenge.

Will: We ended the day taking a small tour of Martha and Lawrence’s new house (still under construction) which is right down the road from the new Ndola Stadium (50,000 capacity).

*Note: I (Will) didn’t take too many photos in the market area as it’s considered rude.

Zambia: Mapalo + Chifubu

Will: We spent the day motoring around the compounds (suburbs) of Ndola, visiting areas that are being targeted by David’s employer, Jubilee Centre, directed by our family friend, Lawrence Temfwe. On my first voyage to Zambia, we had spent our time in Mapalo (then named Chipulukusu). That was 10 years ago so needless to say, it was a little mental to revisit the rural slum right outside of Ndola which has seen it population double from 30,000 to 60,000 people.

Brittany: After visiting Mapalo, Lawrence took us to Chifubu, another compound outside of Ndola.  One of the community churches in the neighborhood runs a sustainable feeding program for the orphaned and vulnerable children.  It was very humbling to witness some of the Chifubu residents serving these children in such a basic but necessary way.
