Four Weeks: How is Everything Going?
Posted by brittanydyan on January 31, 2011

How is everything going?
Every conversation in the past four weeks has included this question. It seems like a simple enough question, but this time it means: how is parenthood treating you? Or, what does it feel like to be completely responsible for another human being? Or, are you completely sleep deprived?
This question(s) is really hard to answer simply and honestly. A short answer would leave a lot of the “fun” details out. An honest answer takes much longer. This blog takes the middle road. You won’t get this answer: “Oh, we are doing great. Nola is awesome. But, we’re a little tired.” But, you won’t get the long winded, completely honest version either. Here is my response in bullet form.
- Taking care of a newborn is tough. They require so much attention, and I was/am a selfish person. At times, I mourn the loss of my freedom to set my own schedule.
- To the above bullet, you might say: duh. The sad thing is that I had no idea of what parenthood would be like. No matter how much people would tell me that it would change my life, I just didn’t get it.
- I celebrate each (very) small accomplishment of this child. I’m thrilled when she looks me in the eyes. I’m so proud when she lifts her head up on her own. I giggle when she poops her pants.
- Sleeping is precious–when she does it and when we get to do it. Nola does not sleep much during the day (she cries a lot instead), and this makes dissertation progress difficult. However, she sleeps really well at night, which keeps her parents fairly refreshed. We’re not talking about a night of uninterrupted sleep, but rather, two blocks of 3 to 5 hours at a time. Not bad.
- Breastfeeding = sjklkjdjkf. But, it’s free. I can give you the full story if you’re interested. You’re probably not.
- I know we’re biased, but we think Nola is adorable. Plus, she was born with a sweet hair-do.
- It takes a while to get to know a baby. I’m still getting to know Nola. I’m ready for some smiles and giggles.
- I love her so much. Plus, I’m really glad I’m not pregnant anymore:)

At least, that’s what it seems like.
