Painting the Town Blue

In.

Come on in!

Sorry, this was an ill-advised attempt to squeeze in a Gob Bluth quote.

As you might can tell, unless you are blind, there has been some renovation to our blog. It first started with our server transfer and now ends with a new coat of paint.

As I am growing as web coder and designer, there are a few things I am beginning to strive for.

The first is compliance. I try to make sure all of my code is up to snuff according to the the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) standards (I’m not there 100% yet …). As you might have noticed on our Baby Blog, I have mirrored a few elements such as the colophon. While it is not necessary that everything be valid, it is just a good practice, in my opinion, to adhere to some sort of guidelines (at also at the same time, drives you insane and keeps you grounded) and to be a little transparent as well.

The second is taking a more streamlined approach. Meaning, I am going to try to let the content drive this site more than the extra fluff. The purpose of blogging is writing (right?) so there will be less frivolous design bits and bobbins and more focus on what we write and how that is presented (at least, that is how I imagine it going). This is why we have a monochromatic palette (plus I’m partial to blue) with more emphasis on typography hierarchy and styles. In essence, I’m trying to K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple, Stupid) – the design should simply be a stage for our narratives and photos, not the focus.

Originally I wanted to launch the new WordPress theme you see here when we switched servers but that actually did not take as long as I thought (thanks, Ben). Not to mention, writing this theme took longer than I intended. But all in all, it was well worth taking the time to code instead of rushing it.

We will certainly be tweaking things (I spent the better part of the afternoon re-sizing images – nothing older than June 2010 has been adjusted) and you may run across a bug or two (if you do, please let me know).

But, with a busy October still in store and some trips planned, I am sure we’ll be back to our quasi-regular schedule shortly.

Ok, We’re Back

Hero affiliated!

Ok, we are  back. A whole lot earlier than planned or anticipated.

Sure, there are some bugs, but we are working on that.

So, what did we do?

For the sake of money, we are partnering with my good friend and what I consider, a sister-blog to our own, Hero, Inc., and sharing server space. We both have been with the same company, 1and1, since we decided to move out from our university allotted web placement and into the wilderness of domain ownership, MySQL databases, and WordPress (which we both proudly run).

The second big change is I am dropping the bramandsons.com domain. It just doesn’t fit into what I am doing for myself in regards to small-time branding. So, paying a little more for something that was essentially useless was less than ideal.

I have some larger changes in mind for the look and feel for our blog so keep your eyes peeled.

Again, thanks for your diligent reading (all three of you) and we will now resume our normal blogging schedule.
